21. Paolo Di Bartolomew Avitabile (1791- 1880) :
After serving in Napels and Persian army, found employment under Ranjit Singh, was appointed Governor of Peshawar in 1934 from where assisted British troops retreating after first Afghan War.
22. Robert Clive (1725-1774) :
Defeated Nawab Siraj-ud- daulah at Plassey, leading to eventual establishment of British rule. For acquiring enormous wealth from India, a Parliamentary inquiry was instigated against him, he committed suicide in 1774.
23. Ramsay Mcdonald :
Conservative PM of Britain during 2nd Round Table Conference, is infamous for the communal award which proposed separate electorate for different religious communities and castes.
24. R.K. Laxman :
Perfected the art of caricature in India. First Indian cartoonist to be included in the international exhibition of cartoons. His "common man" has endeared himself to one and all as the person who symbolizes the nation and the world.
25. Sir Stafford Richard Cripps (1889-1956) :
Labour leader, politically committed to the idea of constitutional reform for India, came to India in 1942 to solve the impasse between Nationalists and Government. His proposals were rejected.
26. S.H. Slocum :
An architect by profession, he designed the Bhakra dam across the river Sutlej, which is the highest straight gravity dam in the world
28. Sakoorji Saklatwala :
A communist leader, he got elected to the British Parliament. He aroused general interest in communism during his visit to India.
29. Theodore Beck :
A British educationist, became the Principal of Aligarh Muslim University. He later contributed to the rise of communalism and communal feelings amongst Muslims.
30. Vishnu Digambar Pulaskar :
Founded the Gandharva Mahavidyal-aya and contributed in improving the status of music.
31. Sir William Cunningham (1814-1893) :
Considered as the father of Indian Archaeology. In 1862, the Indian Government established the post of Archeological Surveyor and Cunningham was appointed to it. He led the excavations in search of Indian Historiography.
32. William Carrey (1761-1835) :
English shoemaker turned Baptist missionary, joined Serampore Danish settlement and translated Bible into Bengali and other Indian languages, later appointed as Professor of Sanskrit and Bengali in Fort William.
33. W. W. Hunter :
The chairman of the Commission appointed in 1882 to review the progress of education in India, since the Wood's Dispatch of 1854.
34. William Jones :
Judge of the Supreme Court of Calcutta, a leading indologist, transla-ted Kalidasa's Sakuntalam into English. He also translated Geeta Govinda and Manu's Dharmashastra. He founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal (1784).
35. Wavell (1883-1950) :
Field Marshal Lord Archibald Percival Wavell, Viceroy of India from 1943-47, was a distinguished soldier and an eminent man of letters. He gave a plan to settle the deadlock between INC and Muslim League, but the same did not find acceptance due to rigid stance of the League.
36. Web Miller :
An American journalist who worked with Gandhiji during salt satyagraha. He reported on atrocities of police on the Congress volunteers of Dharsana.
